#MeToo

For my found poem, I decided to work with an article discussing the #MeToo Movement. The article I reconstructed talked about how justice for these abused women took entirely too long and that their voices deserved to be heard, as they had been silenced for long enough. On a personal level, I couldn’t really relate to the article, as I’ve never experienced anything like that. However, as a woman, I truly felt so bad for these women and their families and hearing that they’ve finally shared their stories really resonated with me and filled me with relief. Too often, women are blamed for what happens to them, and I think the article did a really good job of, it seemed to me, congratulating the women for stepping up and being heard.

I decided to take pieces of the article and almost summarize what happened, with harsh words and fragments, and empty spaces to show that justice took too long. I included the “stay silent/Nassar” part right before the part that says “150 women/allowed to be heard/no matter what it cost” just to reiterate the fact that this is about the women, not about the abuser.

By creating my own found poem, and I may be the only one but, I’ve really come to like poetry. Before, I loved to read poetry but I had never actually written a poem. I think through avoiding all the rules of grammar and creating something unique is a really amazing experience and I’m actually really proud of the poem I created. The only thing is, I struggled with ordering the words and phrases because so many different combinations made sense.

I look forward to reading everyone else’s poems! 🙂

  1. First of all, I love how you decided to talk about the #Metoo movement because it is not an easy topic to discuss. I like how your poem included many of the lingering results that someone experiences post sexual assault. The line “gymnastics a culture of abuse” was a good connection to the Larry Nassar lawsuit. I agree with you that it is so courageous when women share their sexual assault stories. I love the emotion you put into you’re poem!

  2. I felt the same way after writing my found poem, it seemed that arranging the words as I pleased made them feel more powerful. Starting out the poem with the words “A Culture of Abuse” was the perfect beginning for a topic of such sensitive content. The #metoo movement is an intense topic relating to the suffering of thousands of women, therefor needing a strong opening. Also, you repeating it more towards the end shows the importance and emphasis on this culture of abuse. If you relate this culture to events happening that we read about, are women supposed to expect the worst when being put in potentially self harming environments? If always being precautious in these situations is the social norm in this day and age, what can we expect this movement to turn into in the future? Overall I loved reading your poem. You put the words together in a fluent manor and found a careful way to not trigger your audience, but make them feel sympathy for anyone involved in this movement.

  3. I completely agree with the fact that doing this assignment has made me realize I may like poetry even more so than I thought. Doing this assignment was very unique and creative which makes it hard to see similar pieces. I like that you the #MeToo movement because it is not something I had initially thought of. Lastly, I really like that you picked this article without relating to it personally. This shows that you went out of your comfort zone to do this assignment. This could go hand in hand with the fact that in ZONG!, Philip tries to make some of the poems hard to understand to make the readers interpret them in ways she may not have.

  4. I love your found poem! You put so much emotion into it and it really speaks so much volume with not so many words. You picked such a difficult topic to talk or even write about and you finessed this assignment. You made a really good connection to the Nassar lawsuit as well! I agree that this assignment made me like poetry a little more than I used to. Great job 🙂

  5. I really like how you set up this found poem. It makes it a lot more interesting to read and allows readers to be creative. It allows readers to be creative because it could be read several ways. The way the words are put on the page allows for this. I think you got the message of the #MeToo Movement across to readers due to the word choice and way you put the words on the page. You made the readers engage in the movement and want to make change.

  6. This may be TMI for some people, so there’s your warning.

However, as a member of the #MeToo movement, I love your found poem. It astounds me that there even has to be articles, poems, songs, etc., about this. It has become too common these days for people to be put in these situations. What stood out to me the most was “stay silent” and “no matter what it cost”. These two tend to go hand in hand with one another. The challenge now is for everyone to continue to stand up and for this to come to an end. Everyone loves your poem, and #metoo.

Love you girl. Thanks for this <3
